2018 Volkswagen Atlas vs. Honda Pilot vs. Nissan Pathfinder: A Driving Question
November 30 2017,
Normally, mid-size SUV buyers are more interested in interior space, safety and ride comfort than in the driving pleasure and performance of their vehicle.
That said, for some consumers, versatility and refinement should not come at the expense of having fun behind the wheel. For these people, the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is definitely worth considering.
Brand new in its segment, the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is the newest midsize SUV to enter the market. It faces stiff competition that is not lacking in quality models and includes the Honda Pilot and the Nissan Pathfinder.
We will never tell you that these two Japanese models are bad vehicles, because in reality they have a lot to offer. On the other hand, when we are looking for a balanced vehicle that can do everything and do it well, the new 2018 Atlas is hard to beat.
2018 Volkswagen Atlas: versatility married to German engineering
The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is the only German mid-size SUV in its segment which from the outset gives it an advantage. In other terms, the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is one of the most dynamic and agile sport utility vehicles in its segment. On the road, the driver does not feel like he or she is driving an SUV that is so impressive thanks to precise handling and a predictable behavior.
When it comes to the Honda Pilot and the Nissan Pathfinder, several experts will tell you that the emphasis is exclusively on comfort. That's good, but the resulting drive is bland and soulless. As for the new 2018 Atlas, you get the same comfort and the same silence in the cabin, but the driver will also benefit from a much livelier road behavior.
In terms of interior space, the three SUVs offer a third row of seats, but the Atlas stands out by offering a cabin that is a little more versatile and spacious than its Japanese rivals. While the Pilot and Atlas offer substantially the same cargo space behind the second row (1,571 liters in the case of the Atlas), the Pathfinder is behind with only approximately 1,200 liters.
More engine options in the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas
While the Nissan Pathfinder and the Honda Pilot offer only one option in the form of a V6 engine, Volkswagen has decided to offer customers the choice to opt for a four-cylinder or a V6. In the case of the entry-level 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, it offers 235 horsepower and very impressive fuel economy. It will suit those who want space and versatility without the fuel consumption of a six-cylinder engine.
The other option is a 3.6-liter V6 engine developing 276 horsepower. The latter offers roughly the same power as what we find in the Pilot and the Pathfinder.
And finally, the Volkswagen Atlas offers in its high-end version exclusive features including a digital cockpit that no other midsize SUV is able to offer. In fact, all versions of the Atlas offer a touch of sophistication and extra luxury that allows the German SUV to stand out from rivals. Offered from $ 35,690, it's also about $ 5,000 less than the Honda Pilot.
