2024 Volkswagen Atlas vs. Chevrolet Suburban

A VW Atlas facing off against a Chevy Suburban, separated by fire.

In 2024, the Volkswagen Atlas was redesigned to be bigger than ever. It was transformed into a more spacious SUV, with more attention paid to the interior to make it a much more comfortable ride for you and your passengers. With the Atlas getting made bigger and bolder, we wondered just how it would stand up to Chevrolet’s biggest option, the Suburban? Which one has the most to offer you as a driver? Join the SUV experts here at Fifth Avenue Volkswagen as we pit these two behemoths against one another.

Fuel Economy

Let’s face it, the Suburban is a gas guzzler – that’s the cost of having that mighty V8 engine. It may be able to tow a great amount, but the trade off is a measly 14.3L/100km in the city, and 11.8L/100km on the highway. Plus, this beast is unwieldy – especially for city driving, the Suburban is hard to maneuver on busy streets and in tight spaces. If you’re looking for a more city friendly and fuel efficient SUV, the Volkswagen Atlas has it beat. It offers 12.2L/100km in the city and 10.8L/100km on the highway. The difference, especially when it comes to just driving around doing your daily commute, is pretty significant. It can amount to hundreds of dollars in yearly savings on fuel alone.

Features

When it comes to creature comforts, both SUVs offer some great features, but the Atlas has a big edge. The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas includes more standard luxuries than the more spartan Suburban, including heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel to keep you comfortable in any season’s weather. Standard adaptive cruise control also gives you additional driver assistance on those long road trips. The Atlas even throws in conveniences like auto-off headlights and fog lamps which the Suburban doesn’t offer standard. Chevrolet does offer many of these features, but not until you shell out extra for a higher trim level.

Price

Speaking of shelling out for a higher trim level, the Chevrolet Suburban’s base trim level, the LS, starts at $80,325! That’s before options, and it only gets higher the nicer the trim you spring for. The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Comfortline, on the other hand, starts at only $52,572. Heck, the Execline, our highest trim level, is fully $18,000 less than the base model of the Suburban! That’s a pretty hefty difference, for a vehicle packed with more standard features.
