2019 Volkswagen Atlas vs 2019 Kia Telluride

The Volkswagen Atlas has been considered the most fun to drive three-row mid-sized sport utility in Canada ever since it first came out. Now, there’s a new rival after that crown in the form of the 2019 Kia Telluride which has just arrived on the market. Comparable in size and interior space, the Kia Telluride and the Volkswagen Atlas are destined to go head-to-head in a crowded segment.

Except, the Atlas and the Telluride are quite different in their respective value propositions and depending on what you want out of your mid-size SUV and what you want for your family, you may not see the value in the Telluride. The Kia is indeed quite a bit more expensive than the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas by a few thousands of dollars all things being equal. That’s a lot of coin, and if you’re more the pragmatic type you can get quite a bit of luxury and refinement in the Atlas, a bit more space as well and a drive that’s as balanced between comfort and performance, all while saving enough for a family trip to Europe.

Thousands of dollars separate the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas and 2019 Kia Telluride

With a starting price of just over $36,000, the Volkswagen Atlas is roughly $10,000 less than the Kia Telluride. There are a few differences in features and the Atlas at that price will have front-wheel drive, but that doesn’t change the fact that if you just want space and wouldn’t mind getting a fun to drive SUV that offers plenty of luxury in the process, the Atlas will give you all of that for a lot less money. The pricing difference remains true as we climb the versions.

Offered starting at just over $41,000 with all-wheel drive and a similar level of equipment to the entry-level Telluride, the Atlas Comfortline is still $5,000 less than the Kia. All 2019 Volkswagen Atlas models come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a remote starter, power liftgate, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic detection and three-zone climate while also having roughly the same interior space at all three rows. If you lower all two rows in the back, you actually get over 2,700 liters in the Atlas compared to 2,455 liters in the Telluride.
