2019 Volkswagen Atlas vs 2019 Mazda CX-9

Choosing between the Mazda CX-9 and the Volkswagen Atlas is a decision many will have to make when choosing their next mid-size SUV with three rows of seats. The Atlas, Volkswagen's first mid-size SUV, has been very successful since its launch a few years ago. The Mazda CX-9 is also a popular three-row SUV that focuses on driving pleasure.

This is also the case of the Volkswagen Atlas. The German-engineered Atlas is an SUV that we will love to drive, and we will appreciate for its agility and road behavior. It is athletic without being uncomfortable while being dynamic with precise steering. It feels much smaller than it is in reality, this Atlas.

The Volkswagen Atlas has the advantage over the Mazda CX-9 in other areas too

As we said previously, both SUVs are fun to drive. For those who do not want to feel like they are driving an SUV, these are probably the two best options currently available on the market in the mid-size SUV segment. But is there anything more? Even if we want to have fun behind the wheel, we must also get a vehicle that will meet our needs for interior space. The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas has the advantage at this level compared to the Mazda CX-9.

Indeed, the Atlas offers 583 liters of cargo space with the three rows in place compared to only 407 for the CX-9. Subsequently, the Atlas offers more than 2,700 liters of space with the rear seat lowered compared to only 2,017 liters for the Mazda CX-9. Both SUVs have three rows of seats, but the Atlas has much more space.

It is also more powerful when you opt for the 3.5-liter V6 engine. The latter develops 276 horsepower against 227 for the CX-9 which is only available with a four-cylinder engine. This gives the Atlas the ability to tow 5,000 pounds versus 3,500 pounds for the Mazda CX-9.
