2020 Volkswagen Jetta vs. 2020 Honda Civic
Compact cars remain one of Canada’s favourite ways to get around. With options like the all-new 2020 Volkswagen Jetta and 2020 Honda Civic, consumers have never had better equipped, safer and more enjoyable cars to drive. While on the surface, both compact sedans display similar traits, one does cater to the true driving enthusiast.
That said, both the new Jetta and Civic provide comfortable seating for five occupants with plenty of leg- and headroom for all. Their capacious trunks are perfectly adapted to handling all manners of busy life routines. Safety is a priority for both car manufacturers so everyone is in good hands.
Sliding behind the steering and setting off reveals the true differences between both cars. Volkswagen has designed and built cars for the Autobahn from the very beginning and the Jetta’s standard engine epitomizes this desire for the open road. The turbocharged 1.4-litre 4-cylinder engine generates 147-horsepower, which is down 11-horsepower from the Civic’s 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine but the VW has a trick up its sleeve: Torque. Torque is what helps break inertia and gives the driver the feeling of power. The 1.4L delivers 184 lb.-ft. of the stuff at an incredibly low 1,500 rpm. This represents 46 more lb.-ft. of torque than the Civic and 2,700 rpm sooner. Applying throttle from a dead-stop in the Jetta will certainly push you into your seat but that’s not all.
Despite providing more twisting power, the Volkswagen Jetta’s engine consumes less fuel than the Civic. With the optional sporty and efficient 8-speed automatic transmission, the Jetta will uses as little as 5.9L/100km on the highway. With the available continuously variable transmission, the Civic consumes 6.1L/100km but in reality, to keep up with the Jetta, it might not be as frugal.
The list of standard features included with the basic Jetta is very complete and is only part of the car’s overall appeal. With 16-alloy wheels and distinct German styling, the Volkswagen Jetta is a premium compact car no matter what your shopping criterion may be, from design, content to driving experience.
